The Michael-Popp-Foundation and the State of Tyrol initiated a new institute for herbal drug research at the University of Innsbruck.
A further institute enriches the Tyrolean research landscape. The new Research Institute for New Phyto Entities will be established at the University of Innsbruck aiming to accelerate the scientific know-how in the field of new herbal medicines. The Michael-Popp-Foundation invests around 3.5 million euros over a period of five years. The state of Tyrol provides further 1.5 million euros for an endowed professorship.
In addition to the ADSI, which carries out applied R&D and contract research in the field of phytoscreening and identification of active natural substances and which is already working closely with the company Bionorica, there will soon be an institute that provides basic research for the phytopharmaceutical sector. As a result, the competence in the field of phytosciences at the research site of Tyrol is further expanded. The founder, Prof.Dr. Michael Popp, is chairman and owner of the phytopharma company Bionorica SE.
O.Univ.-Prof.Mag.Dr.Dr.h.c. Günther Bonn, scientific director of ADSI, initiated the foundation of the new institute. Thus, the so-called “Phytovalley Tyrol” will in the future house the entire value-added chain, from basic science to applied research resulting in product development of herbal medicines.
